Kick start your IT career with an apprenticeship that puts you at the heart of a fast paced MSP environment! You’ll follow a clear development pathway designed to grow your technical skills, gain real hands-on experience, and progress confidently into a rewarding future in IT Infrastructure.

The Role

The IT Infrastructure & Cloud Trainee plays a valuable supporting role within our IT Professional Services team, working alongside senior engineers to help deliver high quality technical solutions and projects. Under guidance and mentorship from senior engineers, the apprentice contributes to enhancing customer technology environments, supporting the reliability, security, and performance of both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructures.

The role provides hands on experience across servers, networking, cloud platforms, and end-point support, with installation projects and customer communication carried out in collaboration with senior team members. This ensures the apprentice gains practical skills using the latest cutting edge, industry recognised technologies while contributing meaningfully to customer facing work.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Execution & Management
  • Carry out basic IT installation tasks under supervision, following clear instructions and established procedures.
  • Assist with straightforward technical projects such as hardware installations and cloud policy configuration.
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of technical, site, and project documentation.
  • Support the setup of user accounts, devices, and access permissions following guidance from the team.
  • Learn how to manage your workflow and project queue, logging tickets and technical notes accurately and clearly.
  • Shadow experienced team members when working on more complex tasks, gradually increasing independence over time.
  • Escalate issues promptly when unsure or when tasks fall outside your training or access level.
  • Keep your manager informed of progress, asking questions when you need help or clarification.
  • Actively participate in and complete all requirements of the Level 3 Information Communication Technician Apprenticeship, including scheduled training, assessments, reviews, and off-the-job learning, as completion of the apprenticeship is a core requirement of the role.

  1. Leadership & Decision Making
  • Make simple day-to-day decisions confidently within clearly defined boundaries and with guidance from senior team members.
  • Use basic troubleshooting and installation steps to identify straightforward issues, asking for support when problems become more complex.
  • Follow structured processes and checklists to ensure tasks are completed safely, securely, and correctly.
  • Communicate clearly with colleagues and users, keeping them updated in a polite and professional manner.
  • Ask for help early when something seems unusual, risky, or outside your knowledge.
  • Build confidence in understanding how your tasks contribute to wider IT goals such as system uptime, security, and user satisfaction.
  • Offer small suggestions for improvements as you grow in confidence and awareness of IT processes.

  1. Culture & Values
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and integrity in every interaction.
  • Represent The HBP Group positively, maintaining confidentiality and security awareness at all times.
  • Treat colleagues respectfully and support users with patience and clarity, especially under pressure.
  • Uphold ethical and secure behaviour when handling user accounts, devices, or system access.
  • Take pride in accuracy, presentation, and quality in all technical work.
  • Support a service first culture by ensuring enquiries are handled promptly and helpfully.
  • Remain flexible, collaborative, and positive during periods of change, incidents, or high workload.

  1. Growth & Mindset
  • Take ownership of your learning, development, and apprenticeship commitments.
  • Seek regular feedback and apply it to strengthen your technical and professional skills.
  • Show curiosity about how IT infrastructure works and how it supports the wider business.
  • Learn new tools, systems, cloud services, and automation techniques to improve capability.
  • Volunteer for small projects, upgrades, or process improvements to gain experience.
  • Demonstrate resilience when facing technical challenges or busy periods.
  • Take proactive steps toward progressing within the IT Infrastructure career pathway.

Apprenticeship Requirement

As part of the role, the successful candidate must enrol onto and complete the Level 3 Information Communication Technician Apprenticeship. Completion of this apprenticeship is a mandatory requirement and forms a core part of the training, development, and progression pathway for the IT Infrastructure & Cloud Trainee position.

Active participation is required in:

  • Off-the-job training hours
  • Portfolio building and coursework
  • Reviews with the training provider
  • Scheduled apprenticeship teaching and assessment sessions

Progress within the role will directly relate to successful engagement with apprenticeship responsibilities.

Development Pathway

The IT Infrastructure & Cloud Trainee role forms the foundation of the IT Professional Services development framework.

At the end of the 24 month program, and upon successful completion of the apprenticeship and Academy milestones, individuals may progress into the role of Desktop Implementation Engineer.

Performance and development will be assessed in line with the apprenticeship framework and internal Skills Management Platform – Skills Base.

Further development opportunities will continue throughout your career via structured training, technical workshops, and progression pathways.
