When building a strong defence with a layered approach, encryption is key.
BitLocker is Windows encryption technology that protects your data from unauthorised access by encrypting your drive and requiring one or more factors of authentication before it will unlock it, ensuring that your systems and data are kept safe and secure.
Encryption is the process of encoding data or information in such a way that it can only be accessed and read by authorised parties who possess the decryption key. This provides an added layer of security and confidentiality to sensitive information, such as financial data, customer records, or intellectual property.
Windows will require a BitLocker recovery key when it detects a possible unauthorised attempt to access the data. This can also happen if you make changes in hardware, firmware, or software which BitLocker cannot distinguish from a possible attack. In these cases, BitLocker may require the extra security of the recovery key even if the user is an authorised owner of the device. This is to be certain that the person trying to unlock the data really is authorised, so you know that if your system does get into the wrong hands, it’s well protected.
You can have multiple layers of encryption in place at the same time. For example, you can encrypt email messages and also the communication channels through which your email flows. With Office 365, your data is encrypted at rest and in transit, using several strong encryption protocols and technologies.
