What’s Next After Windows 10
Here at The HBP Group, we know the importance of keeping your business technology secure and compliant. That’s why we want to give you a heads-up about a crucial upcoming deadline: the end of support for Windows 10.
On October 14th, 2025, Microsoft will officially stop providing security updates and technical support for most versions of Windows 10. This means that after that date, any business PCs still running Windows 10 will become increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware and other security threats.
What Are Your Options?
There’s a number of things you can do, depending on the position of your business, so we’ve summarised them below and if you’re a customer, we’re happy to talk you through each one and what they’d mean for your business. You will eventually have to move off, so we recommend thinking ahead and getting prepared so the upgrade to your new operating system can be smooth and efficient.
While it might seem like the easiest option on the surface, continuing with an unsupported Windows 10 version is a risky gamble. Without ongoing security patches, your data and systems become prime targets for hackers. Additionally, you might encounter compatibility issues with new software and experience limited functionality as developers move on to supporting newer operating systems.
Microsoft offers a paid subscription program called Extended Security Updates (ESU) for businesses using specific editions of Windows 10 (Enterprise and Education). This program extends security updates for a limited period beyond the October 2025 deadline. However, ESU comes with its own set of drawbacks. It can be a significant ongoing cost, especially for large organisations, and the program only provides temporary security coverage for a maximum of three years. Ultimately, businesses will still need to migrate to a supported operating system in the long run.
If your current devices are incompatible with Windows 11, then investing in new hardware might be a viable option. While this can be a significant upfront cost, it ensures you have the latest technology with built-in security features and compatibility with the newest software and updates.
For most businesses, upgrading to Windows 11 is the most secure and cost-effective solution. Not only does it offer the continued security updates and technical support you need, but Windows 11 also boasts several benefits:
- Enhanced Security: Windows 11 has built-in security features like hardware-based protection and stricter driver verification, keeping your business data safe.
- Improved Performance: Enjoy a smoother user experience with faster loading times and performance optimisations in Windows 11.
- Modernised Interface: The new interface in Windows 11 is sleek and user-friendly, promoting improved productivity within your teams.
- Compliance with Cyber Essentials and Plus: Upgrading to Windows 11 helps ensure your business meets the security requirements for these essential UK government-backed cyber security certifications.
