What is cloud based software?
Without getting too technical, cloud software is basically installed on a server in a data centre and then accessed via the Internet. This differs from traditional on-premise software which is installed on your own server, normally located in a sever room in one of your offices.
Cloud software is normally designed specifically to be used and accessed in this way and therefore is typically used within a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
What are benefits of cloud software for manufacturers?
Just like all cloud software, the two biggest benefits are around flexibility and cost.
Because your software is accessed via a web browser it means that you, or anyone within your company, can work from anywhere. This access doesn’t rely on your own server, or even the power or internet connection from your office and if required users can access the software from anywhere with an internet connection on a compatible device, such as a laptop, tablet or smart phone.
In terms of cost, most businesses see a reduction in overall spend due to the removal of a physical server on their premises. This eliminates the need to buy the server (or servers) in the first place as well as the costs of replacing it, which on average happens every 5 years.
In addition to this, a single piece of cloud-based software, such as MRP software, can have huge benefits for manufacturers as it allows for all key processes to be managed in one place. This means that reporting can be far more accurate, more in-depth and in real-time. This ultimately leads to the business leaders being able to make better, more informed and sensible decisions about the organisation.
